Notes From the Designer:
Everyone has that favorite place where they hang out. Maybe yours is where you read, knit, or enjoy a cup of joe. I do all of the above at a coffee shop on West King Street, hence the name of this pattern. Enjoy the shifting textures and simple lace while you knit your own West King Shawl, and wear it to all of your favorite haunts!
- The original version was made with three skeins of Expression Fiber Arts Dewy DK yarn (4 oz/ 250 yds per skein) in the color Cocoa Black. Note, that version used 748 yds (684 m).
- It is strongly suggested that you purchase a 4th skein to ensure that you have enough yarn to complete your project.
- This shawl is worked sideways from the right wing to the left. A slipped stitch seam runs the length of the shawl and separates the textured upper section from the lower lace section. Increases and decreases are worked at different intervals on each side of the wings.
- The wings themselves are not entirely symmetrical; this is an intentional design feature. The lace pattern will remain constant throughout the body of the shawl, with increases and decreases worked into the pattern. The upper section utilizes various textures in the following order: Garter Stitch, Stockinette Stitch, Seed Stitch, Moss Stitch, Double Moss Stitch, Hedgerows (Stockinette interspersed with Garter bumps), X and Diamond Border, Inverness Diamonds, and Triple Braided Diamonds. After the Triple Braided Diamonds are complete, the other textures will be worked again in reverse order, though not with the same space in between each section. Again, this is intentional. It sounds confusing, but it becomes intuitive rather quickly.
- Gauge is critical for this pattern, especially as cables eat so much yarn.
