Weldon's Venetian Border
I knitted this edging figuring that it couldn’t possibly look as bad as Weldon’s image and it wasn’t! (Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 1, p.9) This is the first knitted edging I’ve come across that has you casting on stitches in the last row instead of binding off to start the next repeat. There are 12 pattern rows with 20 stitches to start with. All wrong-side rows are identical. I added 1 garter stitch at the non-header edge to stabilize it a bit.
The swatch is 2.5 inches at its widest at gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, SK2P and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
40 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread will make 10 inches of a 20-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
