The Kinks

Waterloo Bridge is one of London’s most iconic landmarks. It inspired The Kinks’ famous song, Waterloo Sunset, and holds a special place in every Londoner’s heart. This beautifully simple shawl features a stranded motif inspired by the gentle curves of Waterloo Bridge.

The modern curved boomerang shape is so easy to wear. Drape the widest part in front for a bandana effect, or hang it behind to get more coverage on your back. It also works well as a cosy accessory under a winter coat.

The shawl is written for two colours of fingering weight yarn, but is also a great pattern for mini skeins or for stashbusting. Select one main colour and then work each motif strip in a different contrast colour.

Yarn required
Fingering/4 ply yarn as follows: 437 yards/400m of the main colour; 66 yards/60m of the contrast colour.

The design also works well at a looser or tighter gauge. Note that changing gauge will affect the yarn quantities used.

You can make a slightly smaller version of the shawl using madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light. One skein of the main colour plus one Unicorn Tail will make a generous-sized shawl - simply omit the final pattern repeat.

Size
When following the pattern at the stated gauge, your shawl will be this size: 29.5”/75cm width across bottom edge; 49”/125cm height. You can adapt the size by changing needle size, yarn weight, or simply by adding more pattern repeats.

Special Techniques
The shawl motif is worked using stranded knitting. If you haven’t stranded while knitting flat before, you will be surprised to discover how easy it can be :-)
