Waltzing in Vienna
Have you ever been to Vienna in Austria? This jewel of a town is located at the beautiful river Danube. It is famous for its coffee houses with “Gemütlichkeit” and the delicious “Sachertorte”. But also the arts are at home in Vienna. Jugendstil has played a huge role in Vienna’s décor and architecture and who can imagine this place without the glorious ballrooms and the Viennese Waltz.
If you cannot visit yourself Waltzing in Vienna will bring the dancing spirit right into your home. Its art nouveau shape is based on six interlocking modules - three on each side, as if both sides were holding hands, swirling and dancing in circles.
To “Waltz in Vienna” you will need three contrasting yarns. Two for the waltzing “partners” and one for the joining i-cords. Solids, semi solids, tip dyed yarns, color gradients and especially very long color gradients – all will work nicely. I knitted one version with Laceballs from Shoppel (two strands at a time to create extra long color gradients) and two other with yarn from Wollelfe which has an extra long color gradient. More options for extra long color gradients are listed below.
You can choose between three different versions according to your taste and the amount of yarn you have at your disposal.
Version I: Yarn A = 265 yds/240 m; Yarn B = 660 yds/600 m; Yarn C = 530 yds/480 m;
Version II: Yarn A = 220 yds/200 m; Yarn B = 440 yds/400 m; Yarn C = 400 yds/365 m
Version III: Yarn A = 220 yds/200 m; Yarn B = 500 yds/460m; Yarn C = 515 yds/470 m
My stitch definition is not rock solid but still on the tighter end of the scale. If you prefer your shawls to be kitted a bit looser, you might need more yarn.
Waltzing in Vienna is a fully reversible shawl with an almost 3 dimensional texture due to several i-cords and short rows. If you have never worked with i-cords or short rows before you will find ample photo tutorials on the necessary techniques. Also you will find all instructions in written and charted form plus graphics that explain the structure.
Waltzing in Vienna is knitted lengthways so you will need two pairs of 32” or 40” circular needles. One with your preferred needle size and one slightly thicker for the i-cords.
