Wafting Ferns
This pattern is from 1892 Butterick’s The Art of Knitting, p.13, no.15. It has a multiple of 9 stitches + 2 optional selvage stitches. There are 12 pattern rows. The 6 wrong-side rows are fairly plain and the right-side rows are quite predictable in a good way. In one 10-row repeat or less, you’ll likely be able to knit this pattern without the instructions. The 38-stitch swatch is 3.75 inches wide at gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, p2tog tbl and bind off in knit stitch.
P2tog tbl is awkward for some. There’s an alternative method in the notes and on Youtube.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
69 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread will make 10 inches of a 38-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
