When I was asked to design this commemorative shawl for the Barcelona knits yarn festival, I saw it clear that it had to be a garment that represented the city, and there is nothing more representative of Barcelona than modernism, and no one represents it as internationally as Gaudi does. So I resorted to my favourite piece by the architect, which happens to be one of his less well-known ones, the Vicens House, as I rediscovered its triangle-shaped ceramic veneering, that reminded me of the lotus flowers.
I also figured that the shawl should be apt for all kinds of knitters, experienced and not, and that it should be able to grow in case anyone opted to use more yarn than it was originally designed for.
And that’s how the Barcelona Shawl was born, a simple and enjoyable shawl, with a modernist twist that I hope you enjoy knitting.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
To knit this shawl you should know how to knit, purl, garter tab cast on, pick up sts, yarn over and knit sts together.

GAUGE:
24 sts x 28 rounds in 10 x 10 cm, with 3.75 mm needles or the required needle size to obtain gauge.

MATERIALS:
1 skein La Bien Aimée Merino Singles in the colourway Barcelona, 3.75 mm / 80 cm circular needles, or the required needle size to obtain gauge.

• SPANISH* Cuando me encargaron este chal conmemorativo del Barcelona knits festival tenía claro que debía ser una prenda que representara a la ciudad, y no hay nada más representativo de Barcelona que el modernisme y además nadie lo representa tan internacionalmente como Gaudi, por lo que recurrí a mi obra favorita de este arquitecto que además no es la más conocida, la Casa Vicens y redescubrí sus recubrimientos cerámicos triangulares que me recuerdan a las flores de loto.

También pensé que este chal debía ser apto para todo tipo de tejedores, más y menos experimentados y que además tendría que poder crecer en el caso de que alguien quiera utilizar más hilo que la madeja con la que ha sido ideado.

Y así surgió el chal Barcelona, un chal sencillo y entretenido con un toque modernista que espero disfrutes mucho tejiendo.
