Vibrant Journey Shawl
Vibrant Journey Shawl Pattern is truly an adventure for any crocheter, combining the fun of selecting yarn shades that complement each other and experimenting with new stitches.
Working on this design involves a variety of techniques: from simple stitches like chain and single crochet to double treble crochet, to more advanced skills such as front and back post stitches, clusters, picot, working in the back, third, and fourth loops, and other complex combined stitches like flowers or leaves.
These more intricate combined stitches are all explained with both written instructions and photos in the pattern. I know it may sound complicated, but I’m here to guide you step by step to ensure your success with this scarf. Plus, I’ve balanced the simple and more challenging rows so you can unwind with an easier section before taking on the next challenge.
Each row comes with detailed written instructions, which are comprehensive, but I understand it can be helpful to see the finished piece before you begin. So, alongside the written instructions, I’ve included a chart for each row, showing you the structure visually. Additionally, I’ve added a photo of each row, so you can check if you’ve achieved the desired result. If it still seems tricky, you can follow along with a video where Tania Leis generously shares her experience working with this pattern—each row includes a link with a specific timestamp, making it easy to follow along at your own pace. And if you get stuck, feel free to reach out to me, and I’ll be happy to help!
MATERIALS
I find Tones Light by Brooklyn Tweed to be the perfect yarn for this design: first, the colorways are absolutely gorgeous; second, this fingering weight (fine) yarn has a 2-ply structure that creates a slight halo. Paired with a 4 mm (G-6) hook, this made for a lightweight and warm scarf that worked up quickly.
I used the following colors of Tones Light yarn by Brooklyn Tweed:
Undertones: Baseline, Vacay, Hollyhock
Overtones: Vacay, Hollyhock, Acer, Granita, Persimmon, Icicle, Goldfinch, Zest
The pattern includes detailed information on the total amount of yarn I used for each color, the amount used per row, and the color sequence for each row.
Gauge:
15 dc x 10 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm)
If you plan to use a different yarn, I recommend choosing a weight from sport/baby to DK/light worsted. Keep in mind that using different yarn will affect the amount of yarn needed and the gauge (and thus the final size of the scarf) compared to the original.
You will also need:
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Stitch markers
SIZE
Width: 49 cm (19.3 in)
Length (without fringes): 169 cm (66.5 in)
Length (with fringes): 200 cm (78.7 in)
Starting with the first row of Romanian Crochet Cord, you’ll add a new color for each row along the long side of the scarf. The pattern includes instructions on how to make the scarf longer (or shorter) to suit your preference. Hint: If you want to turn this into a ruana or crochet a wide wrap, follow the instructions for each row, starting from the second row, symmetrically on both sides of Row 1.
