Creeping tendrils of purple vetch knotted among the tall grass are a welcome snack for passing cows and little girls put out to pasture for the day. As a young girl, my sister and I would suckle at these lovely purple flowers to take in the hint of sweet nectar the last bumble bee had missed. We marveled at how this seemingly delicate plant could climb anything in sight with such confidence, as we wished we could, too.

Vetch is a deceptively simple lace scarf that incorporates a simple bloom pattern with undulating ribs of openwork. Pattern instructions are both written and charted with detailed instructions on how to follow them. In addition, the knitter is encouraged to “read” the lace; Additional tips teach you how to break down and memorize the lace pattern with ease. Vetch is given for two finished sizes; A scarf or a wrap.

This is perfect summer picnic knitting for new and experienced lace knitters alike. You will be fetching all year in your Vetch Lace Scarf/Wrap!

Materials:
1(2) skeins of Manos de Uruguay Alegria
OR 400 (800) yards fingering weight yarn
4.5 mm (US7) needles, straight or circular
Stitch markers
Wool needle

Skills Used:
Basic lace knitting, chart reading (detailed instructions included)

Finished measurements:
Scarf: 10” width, 57” length
(Wrap: 18” width, 72” length)

Gauge:
One pattern repeat (18sts) = 4 inches. Gauge is not crucial for this project.
