This design accompanies the Special Topics in Finishing article on seaming vertical to horizontal edges. This is the technique used to seam the top of sleeves to the sweater body. The drop shoulder sleeves of Vanda will give you a lot of practice.

This jacket features a very simple construction. The body consists of 3 rectangles with no armhole or neckline shaping. No bands are picked up. The “collar” is created by folding over the fronts. There are vents at the sides, and the sleeves feature the same vents, which are closed by stockinette tabs with two buttonholes.

When selecting a size, please note that there is 2” of ease, and the fronts for Sizes L–6X are wider than the back. Note that the armholes also have 2” of ease to allow for wearing the jacket over a shirt or sweater. The sample shows a tab which closes the front. This is optional.

I chose a simple K4P4 ribbed pattern since the Stitch Anatomy article discusses ribbed patterns. When worked in linen and blocked very firmly, a ribbed pattern transforms into an embossed fabric.

About the name…the color name for this is Orchid, and I searched for photos of orchids that matched the color, and I found Brighton Sunset of the genus Vanda.
