What would happen if I told you that you could make the perfect casual cardigan that could be worn two ways? Meet the Upside! Upside Cardi is an easily constructed, boxy, oversized cardigan worked in pieces. The front panels overlap at the shoulders, without neck shaping. This creates a shoulder seam that sits back on the shoulders and drapes over the front. Turn the sweater ‘upside’ down and you have a gorgeous split-hem detail in the back and a shawl collar in the front.

• Gauge Needle: Size US 10 (5.5mm) 32” circular needles or longer, or size necessary to obtain gauge

• Smaller Needle: Size US 9 (5.0mm) 32” circular needles — or one size smaller than gauge needle

• Sleeve Needle: Size US 5 (3.75mm) straight or circular needles — or five sizes smaller than gauge needle

GAUGE

14 sts x 24 rnds = 4” in st-st using 1 strand each of yarn A and B with Gauge Needles, worked flat and blocked.

24 sts X 36 rows/rnds = 4” in K1P1 Rib using yarn A only and Sleeve Needle, worked flat OR in the round (depending on your sleeve option), slightly stretched and blocked

PATTERN NOTE

This geometric sweater is essentially 5 rectangles. The fronts and back are seamed together. There is then an option to pick up the sleeves and work in the round. Alternatively, the sleeves may be knit flat as rectangles and seamed to the sweater. No matter how you wear yours, I know you won’t want to take it off! Just keep flipping it ‘upside’ down and no one will know the difference!
