Updo is a wide headband that knits up quickly in super bulky yarn. I’ve always found that headbands made in the round eventually stretch out. Updo solves that by working flat from the centre out so that ends match nicely and the button can be moved if needed after lots of wear.

Updo uses Judy Becker’s Magic Cast-on to work from the centre out - a circular needle is used for the cast-on, and an additional needle of the same size is used to work first one side and then the other.

S (M, L); 19 (20.5, 22) in/48 (52, 56) cm long, 5 in/13 cm wide all sizes. Choose a size that is 2 in/5 cm smaller than the wearer’s head, measured around from forehead to nape of neck and over the ears. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size and adjust button placement as needed. The headband should fit snugly.

Choose a super bulky weight yarn that is soft for next-to-skin wear but is not too drapey, and is well insulating, 90 y/82 m per 100g.

60 (65, 70) y/55 (60, 65)m Madeline Tosh ASAP (100% wool; 90 y/82 m per 3.5 oz/100 g),1 skein. Pink version is colour Barbara Deserved Better. Black & white version shown in colour Soot.
