Inspired by a versatile handknit tube featured in an early 1900’s Shetland House Catalog published by John White and Company of Edinburgh, the cowl (double cap)/cravat features a stockinette stitch base with gradually closer purl line accents that blend into a circular garter section, which then shifts into a reverse stockinette stitch mid-section similar to the original. Tubular doubled caps of this type have been around for centuries, especially in Scandinavia, Europe, and the British Isles. Practical accessories such as this were recommended as useful gear for soldiers in World War I (1914–1918).
