Welcome indeed, to the inner depths of my own twisted soul! This pattern gives you a glimpse into the darkest recesses of my brain, and I can only apologise for what you might find in there, if you examine things too closely!

I originally designed these socks for a Mystery Knitalong held through June and July 2017, but the pattern has now been consolidated for single download, and here it is!

The Twisted Soul socks are a fascinating, two-colour design, unlike any pair of socks you will have seen or made before. They feature a deliciously complex and beautiful textured pattern all the way down the leg, with curves, and diagonals and waffles all delicately intertwined.

Thanks to an ingenious method of construction, gone is the traditional gusset—instead, the decreases are hidden into the design across the top of the foot, having the effect of pulling a wide slice of sumptuous lace round from the sides of the ankle, into a point, in the middle of the instep.

Crucially, these socks are intended to be a fraternal pair, rather than an identical pair, with the two colours reversed on the second sock. This has the benefit of making sure that you will use exactly the same amount of each yarn across the pair.

The Twisted Soul socks make use of the twisted, travelling stitches that are traditionally seen in Bavarian knitting, creating intricate lines of texture in your work that can take you in as many different directions as you choose. I love working with this type of cable—it really feels like you are painting lines on the sock with your knitting.

There are many twists and turns along the route to making these socks, and some of them will be unfamiliar, and probably very unexpected! The construction is very different from other socks you may have made, but don’t lose heart: keep breathing, read the pattern instructions very carefully, and as always, just take things One Stitch at a Time (#OSSAT).

For best results with this pattern, I very strongly recommend using solid colours, rather than multi-coloured or variegated yarns. The pattern is plenty busy enough on its own, and you will have gone to quite a lot of trouble to create the design on your sock, the last thing you want is for the colours in the yarns to destroy all your hard work, rendering the cables invisible!

Importantly, there is only one size given for this sock. The nature of the design makes it very difficult to grade the pattern for other sizes, and I didn’t want to compromise the look of the socks by making the necessary instruction to provide three different sizes, so pay attention to the gauge of the socks, and if you want to substitute different yarn or needles in order to get a gauge that will fit your feet, then that should be enough.
