Turtledove is a wide, poncho-like cardigan that will become your favorite lightweight layering piece. The frothy, floating fabric drapes lower in back, sweeping up to overlapping fronts that can also be buttoned. Wrap yourself in graceful lines, like the wings of the ordinary, lovely turtledove.

Sizes: small/medium: 37”wide (74” circ), 18” long from shoulder to hem, large/extra large: 43”wide (86” circ), 22” long from shoulder to hem

Materials: heavy lace to sport-weight yarn, 800 (1200) yards, shown here in Isager Spinni (Wool1)
Straight or circular needles, size US9, or the size you need to get the correct gauge

Optional: 5 (6) buttons, 1/2” to 5/8”, size US6 needles, and 2 removable markers, for button bands

Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch, after firmly blocking (stitch gauge is more important than row gauge here- instruction on working with different row gauge is included)

Pattern notes: The cape-like shape and generous width of this piece mean that each size will fit a range of bodies. The smaller size is shown here on a dressform with a 34” bust, and also on a model with a 38” bust.

The Spinni has excellent body, due to the nature of the wool it is spun from. Laceweight yarns with lots of drape may be too slinky when knit at this gauge. Be sure to make (and block!) nice large swatches when choosing different yarn, to make sure you will be happy with the end result.
