Tunisian Shakti Scarfythings
This is an all-season, use-any-yarn design: any weight, fiber, amount, and Tunisian hook size. Compare the dense wintery wool scarves with the breezy summery examples pictured.
Shakti Scarfythings is a great introduction to my other Tunisian crochet on the bias, such as Aery Faery, Four Peaks, and Petals. The offset rows stretch and drape dynamically.
When you’re done, seam your scarf several different ways for new fashion looks (optional). A few are pictured here. An angled mobius with a corner is one of my favorite seamed shapes.
This “superpattern” includes a menu of six projects for you to choose from. Use it as inspiration for your own freeform project: pair your own yarn and hook size, then choose how many chains you start with and how many rows you end with. Make easy reversible scarves and shawls that are as lacy or solid as you like, based on the yarn and hook size you choose.

It’s really all about one powerful Tunisian crochet stitch. Oddly, this stitch has no standard name or description, and doesn’t seem to be one of the basic stitches one learns after the Tunisian Simple Stitch, even though it’s easy to do! I’ve seen it called several things. I prefer Extended Knit Stitch and abbreviate it Tkes or Teks. See this newsletter issue, it’s all about this wonderful stitch!
Skill Level: Easy. You should already be familiar with beginner Tunisian crochet patterns; here’s a handy checklist. This pattern also qualifies as practice for these other DesigningVashti patterns: Smokestack, Mesmer & Maze Vest, the Islander, and Neck Lattice.
After using this pattern you will know (if you didn’t already):
- How to crochet the Tunisian Extended Knit Stitch
- How biasing works with Tunisian crochet stitches
- How to crochet easy Tunisian lace by pairing a crochet hook size and yarn
- How to seam a crochet scarf into four or more fashion wraps
UK and Australian equivalents to American measurements, yarn weights, and stitch terms are provided in brackets.
