A beanie in three sizes featuring a riffle pattern with trout swimming through. The beanie is knitted in the round, and the trout are knitted in one piece. The only sewing is to attach the trout to the hat at the fins and mouth. Make one trout or several, or none if you’d just like a Riffle Beanie.

An intermediate knitter should be able to tackle this pattern. It has a reverse honeycomb stitch, a few short rows and is knitted in the round. The trout is a little fiddly but all the test knitters did quite fine with it. It does involve more knitting in the round and picking up sts for the fins.

The band, hat body and fish are all knitted with fingering weight yarn. You may use any fingering yarn, but the yarn used in the hat pictured is

Gauge 28 sts and 32 rows / 4” (10 cm) with MC in unblocked stockinette. Note – row gauge is not important.
