A stranded colourwork cowl inspired by a Venetian mosaic floor

Featuring stranded colourwork knitted in the round, with a chevron lower edging and a knitted on lace top edging, this cowl is inspired by a mosaic pavement in Torcello, Venice. The hand dyed yarns by Madelinetosh and The Yarn Collective imitate the mottled colours of the ancient marble.

The cowl in knitted in one piece in the round using a circular needle.

Yarn:
Bloomsbury DK 100% merino (240m/263yd per 100g skein):
1 skein Sand (colour A)
1 skein Copper (colour B)

Madelinetosh Tosh DK 100% merino (205m/225yd per skein) :
1 skein Onyx (colour C)

Yarn substitution:
The suggested yarns should knit to a gauge of 22sts per 4in/10cm in stockinette stitch on US 6 (4mm) needles therefore the following approximate quantities of a similar weight DK yarn may be used:
colour A - 130m/142yd
colour B – 65m/71yd
colour C – 130m/142yd

Quantities may vary depending upon gauge and type of yarn used

Needles and notions
US 6 / 4mm 16”/40cm circular needle stitch marker, tapestry needle for finishing

Gauge
25sts (measured at middle or top of cowl) and 27.5 rows to 4”/10cm after wet blocking across stranded colourwork -
adjust needle size if necessary to obtain gauge

Note - equivalent stitch gauge is 21.5sts immediately above lower chevron border as this edging naturally gives the cowl a
slightly flared shaping towards the base

Measurements
One size: length 30cm (12in), circumference 74cm (29.5in) at lower edge, 64cm (25.5in) at upper edge
