THRIFTY MARLA’S SOCKS

Whether you are in need of some thick boot socks, a quick gift-knitting project, or would simply like to make a pair of socks without torturing your hands with tiny needles, this pattern could be for you.

All you need is two strands of standard sock yarn - preferably in different colours to achieve the marled effect. The results are so nuanced and interesting, you will soon be sure to amass an entire collection - using up your remnant sock yarns in the process!

With instructions for either toe up or cuff-down, Thrifty Marla offers options for standard mid-calf length socks, for knee-high ‘boot socks’, or for dramatic over-the-knee stockings, without disrupting or over-stretching the ribbed pattern. This is accomplished using the same technique featured in the Expanding Rib Beanie. It is ‘invisible,’ and surprisingly simple.

NOTES ON YARN SELECTION

For a durable hiking sock: use two strands of commercial or indie-dyed sock yarn (superwash with nylon)

For socks with a more casual use case scenario, you can use two strands of non-super wash/ nylon free sock yarn, or any fingering-weight yarn. To achieve the marled effect with Donegal Tweed, simply use 2 strands of Darnie in different colours.

For Höner och Eir Nutiden and similar unspun yarns, a separate pattern file is provided!

The pattern includes notes on how to create interesting marled colour ways.
