This is a pattern for a large triangular shawl designed in honour of William Van Alen. Van Alen was a fervent supporter of innovation in architecture and a pioneer of the art deco movement. The Van Alen shawl includes knitted lace patterns inspired by the geometric designs used throughout the deco period.

This is a pattern for a heart-shaped shawl, knit from the top down, incorporating traditional Shetland stitches; garter stitch rows some including lace stitches. You are encouraged to use distinctive beads (~800 size 6/0 or 8/0), the sample knit used triangle beads size 8/0 in bronze. The pattern is both written and charted.
