This is a classic shawl, featuring scalloped border and is one of the most widely known and characteristic of Shetland designs. It is quickly knitted on very large needles. In white it makes the warmest and most luzourious of baby shawls. The coloured version shown on the back cover is popularly and traditionally worn by Shetland women and looks smart and becoming with tweeds. The natural colours of the undyed sheep’s wool are used: grey, Shetland black, (a very dark brown), moorit (Brown) and white. Sometimes a beige natural is used for the main colour, in place of grey.

The white and brown scalloped stripes in the border are said to be inspired by the incoming tide, washing in lines of seaweed. An ounce or two of pink and blue similarly worked into a white border makes a pretty variation on the baby’s shawl.

Materials
Requires 7 ozs of Templeman’s Ayrella Fingering 3 ply in grey and 1 1/2 ozs each in black, dark brown and white or 10ozs for the shawl made in one color.

1 pair each of “old “ English size 4 and 5 needles (5.5 mm and 6 mm).

Pattern is written and starts with centre square, scalloped border (knit in 4 pieces) and edging (knit in 4 pieces) which are then sewn together and then “dressed” or blocked to 44” finished size.
