The Rothko Sweater
After Mark Rothko, No. 2 Black on Deep Purple, 1968.
Yarn Requirements:
A (variegated gray in sample): approx. 800 (800, 800, 1200, 1200, 1200, 1200) yd
B (brown in sample): approx. 400 yd
C (black in sample): approx. 400 yd
D (variegated pink in sample): approx. 200 yd
The Rothko Sweater is worked modularly; each piece builds on previous pieces, so there is minimal finishing. The center front panel is knit first, from the bottom up. Then, stitches are picked up along one edge of the panel, and the remainder of the body is worked sideways beginning with the right front, then continuing across the back, and ending with the left front, which is seamed to the other side of the center front panel. The hem, upper back, and upper front are picked up from these stitches. Finally, the shoulder seams are joined, sleeve stitches are picked up along
the armholes, and the sleeves are worked in the round from the top down.
