A simple garter stitch shawl which knits up to give a long, thin wrappable shape. A set of paired, central decreases give a mitered-style centre to make the most of contrasting stripes. It is deceptively small whilst knitting, but as a kite soars majestically after launch, this shawl (whilst not exactly reaching those giddy heights) will certainly expand magically after a good blocking.

Kites need careful handling to avoid a sudden crash - similarly kite shaped shawls are notorious for running out of yarn on the final few (long) rows. For that reason I recommend you ensure that you have at least 60g of your main yarn. Or another 10g of emergency contrast yarn that goes with your chosen colours.

SMALL VERSION (light duck egg blue/coloured stripes)

The sample as shown uses 60g main colour and 5x10g mini skeins

This pattern is ideal for stashbusting or for using up some mini-skeins. The yarns in this project came from the fabulous LucyLocketLand

LARGER VERSION (pink/grey stripes)
This is an adaptation - included in the pattern - for a larger 2 skein version which uses 2x100g skeins of fingering weight yarn.

Wondering about the name? The working title for this was Milvus (latin for kite) but as I run a busy Facebook group (and am a member of others) I often see requests for “Pattern Please” when people share their work - often when the name of the pattern has already been mentioned several times. I know I’m probably being a grump in my old age but this always irritates me. And when I was knitting this shawl, the thought kept occurring to me - what if I just called this “Pattern Please” - just think of the confusion I could cause :slightly_smiling_face:
But I couldn’t have that as a pattern name due to Rav guidelines - The PPS was the next best thing

Since publishing this design I’ve since been made aware that the concept of the Kite Shaped shawl was first developed by Martina Behm with her Match & Move design. Naively I thought this type of design had been around for many years, having seen so many variations of it on Ravelry and I had no idea that it has only been around for 5 years or so.
So, I’d like to formally acknowledge that the kite-shape of this shawl is based on the innovative work of Martina Behm.
