The Magnollia Travel Felted Bag
Project Description
The Magnolia Travel bag is knit from the bottom up,
beginning with a Stockinette, color-work bottom. Stitches
are picked up around the bottom and then the body of the
bag is knit in charted color pattern in the round.
Little finishing is required: put a zipper in the top opening
with hand stitches. Attach a leather or other handle
directly with Chicago Screws or clip to the beefy handle
brackets pictured here. Screw-in or prong bag feet can be
attached to the bottom for a sleek, finished look.
Safe Travels!
Difficulty Level
Intrepid Intermediate to Experienced Knitters
This pattern requires knowledge of knitting and purling
using stranded color work methods, with careful attention
to maintaining an even tension, knitting in the round on
circular needles, and picking up stitches. Sewing is used in
the finishing process.
Pre-felted Gauge
Approximately 13.5 sts and 14.5 rows over 4” (10cm) with
double-stranded worsted weight yarn on a size 11 (8mm)
needle worked in color pattern.
The most important aspect
of gauge here is consistency throughout piece and even
tension. It is very important not to pull your carries too tight
across the back of your knitting as this will cause a pucker
in the felted fabric.
Yarn Requirements
All the yarn used for this pattern is finely-milled, worsted
weight, feltable yarn. I used Stonehedge Fiber Mill’s
Shepherd’s Wool (worsted weight; 100% merino wool; 250
yds 229m 4 oz 110g skein):
• 5 skeins of Main Color (A) Black
• 5 skeins of Contrast Color (B) White
• 1 skein of Edging and Picot Main Color (C) Raspberry
• 1 skein of Edging Contrast Color (D) Hot Pink
Needles and Other Materials
- Size 11 (8mm) 32” (80cm) circular needles or needle size to obtain gauge
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Sewing needle and sewing thread for bag finishing
- 1 30” (76cm) HUGE-toothed zipper with 2 round-pull sliders (components available at www.thezipperlady. com)
- 1 pair 36” (91cm) JUL Flat Strap Forager leather handles attached with Chicago Screws
- OR 1 pair of JUL Curvy handles plus 4 Noni Handle Brackets (large size pictured on Black and White sample with medium size pictured on the Raspberry and Hot Pink sample)
- 11 or 20 Noni 24mm bag feet in nickel or gunmetal (sold in packs of 6) OR 11 - 20 Noni Amazing Bag feet in nickel (sold individually)
- Mat board to stiffen the bag bottom
- Super glue for use during the finishing process
- Straight pins for use when sewing the zipper in between the zipper plackets
Approximate Unfelted Dimensions
21” (53.3cm) tall from bottom edge to picot bind off edge
27” (68.6cm) wide across front/back face
5.5 - 7” (14 - 17.7cm) deep (bag side/bag bottom)
Approximate Felted/Finished Dimensions*
Bottom Dimensions: 22” (56cm) wide x 5.25” (13cm) deep
Width of Bag at Top: 24” (61cm) wide x 5.25” (13cm) deep
Height of Bag: 16” (40.5cm) tall from base to picot point
All measurements are approximate and, thus, the finished
size can vary. Finished dimensions depend on several
factors, including the fiber content of the chosen yarn, the
yarn color, consistency of gauge and tension, as well as
the felting method, and how long the bag is felted in the
clothes washer or dryer.
