The Librarian Onesie inherits its name and stitch pattern from the adult Librarian pullover. It’s a top-down raglan worked in the round with a steek for button opening at the front, and the length is easily adjustable. The stitch pattern features faux-cables and the raglan increases in pattern are charted for each size.

Techniques used in this pattern include: increases, decreases, steeking, twisted stitches and German short-rows. Explanations or links to tutorials are provided throughout.

Yarn
Hillesvåg Vidde (100% Norwegian wool, 200 m / 218 yds, 100 g)

You will get the best results with worsted/aran weight sheep’s wool yarn with a good stitch definition such as Hillesvåg Varde, Rauwerk DK, Sandnes Peer Gynt, De Rerum Natura Gilliatt etc.

Yarn amounts: (336, 406, 515, 662) m / (367, 444, 563, 725) yds.

Needles
Gauge-size needles for working body, legs and sleeves in the round, and 1 mm below gauge-size needles for rib.

The sample was made using 5.5 mm (US 9) and 4.5 mm (US 7).

16 sts x 28 rnds = 10 cm / 4” stockinette st.

Children’s sizes vary greatly within each age-group. Case in point: the sample is a 2 years size worn by a very large 1-year-old. So I suggest either measuring the recipient’s chest circumference and add 5 cm / 2” of positive ease, or simply choose a size above their current age. I also suggest making the body, legs and sleeves longer than the recipient’s current measurements.

Construction
The Librarian Onesie is worked top-down in the round with a steek for the button opening. While working raglan increases the body is worked in a twisted stitch pattern and the sleeves in plain stockinette.

Towards the end of the body short-rows are worked for the bum, followed by increases for the legs. The legs and sleeves legs are worked in the round while decreasing towards the cuff. To finish, the steek is cut open and button bands worked flat.

Steek stitches do not count towards your total stitch count, and should be secured using the crochet method before cutting through. If you have substituted with superwash yarn, you should secure the steek with sewing machine seams on either side.
