The design brief from Fibre Arts Shed was to use two vastly different colour ways of 8 ply mill waste to make a cowl. My focus on texture enabled the colours to be a secondary feature, not a highlight. The simple textured repeat pattern makes the knitted fabric undulate both horizontally and vertically, like little waves that continuously ripple, as the central ridge of the triangles creates movement within each striped layer.

Because the doughnut shape of the cowl shows the stripes vertically, it is flattering to wear for all figure types and very warm due to the double layer.

There are 2 CO/BO options: provisional CO with Kitchener stitch (grafted) OR a normal (cable) CO where you pick up the stitches later to use a three needle BO to finish. Even though the BO is on the outside, it is hidden by the stripes and the pattern.

The Carol Ann Cowl looks great in hand spun as well as commercial yarn (such as a solid with a multicoloured to create the stripes). This design enables you to use up all the available yarn.
