This is a basic pattern for an adult size mitten with a unique thumb shaping method.
It is suitable as a first mitten project with lots of additional explanations and pictures.
I suggest an Aran weight yarn for this mitten. Aran weight yarn is slightly heavier than worsted weight yarn.

These mittens work up fast and make great gifts! You can get very creative with this pattern! How about adding something with duplicate stitch? Or adding beads?
