PIF started in 2017 at the DC Pen Show, with the dual purpose of providing free starter kits to people new to fountain pens, and to run a “Give a Pen, Take a Pen” space at each pen show. Each starter kit consists of a fountain pen, a vial of ink, a cartridge, and a pocket notebook. In their first year, PIF gave away over 300 starter kits at the DC and San Francisco pen shows. As of April 2018, PIF has given away hundreds of starter kits at the Baltimore Pen Show. PIF operates entirely as a non-profit: it is run by volunteers, and all donations go towards the cost of supplies, giveaway items, etc.
