After creating the Text(ure) Me socks, I thought that a cowl with a similar design would be equally fun to knit - and I was right! This is a perfect pattern for minis, scraps, or advent leftovers. The texture pattern and changing colors of this cowl keep your interest while it remains easy enough to knit while watching TV.
The length of the cowl is highly customizable. My sample has 24 stripes. I have a few suggested lengths in the pattern.
While I have written this pattern for fingering weight, you could absolutely knit it in DK weight. You would just need to decide what needle size you like to use with DK to achieve the fabric that you want.
Finished Measurements: 7” (18cm) wide x 37” (94cm) circumference, blocked.
Gauge: 28 stitches and 38 rows over 4” (10cm) in Pattern Repeat in the round, blocked.
Yarn:
Fingering weight yarn: 100g (463yds / 423m) MC, and 6 CCs at 10g each.
Each CC stripe uses approximately 2g of yarn.
This amount of yarn will knit a cowl the same size as my sample with 24 stripes. If you want a longer cowl, you will need more of both your MC and CCs.
Needles: Size 4 (3.5mm) 16” (40cm) circular needle, plus another Size 4 circular needle (may be longer than 16”)
If 16” circulars are not good for you, you can use two 24” needles for the two circular method, or a circular long enough to do magic loop.
Extras: A crochet hook in similar size to your knitting needle, scrap yarn, stitch marker, 2 removable stitch markers, and a tapestry
needle.
Sample cowl: 24 CC stripes, used 87g MC, and 8g each of 6 CCs
Tester 1: 18 CC stripes (6 CCs x 3 stripes each), used 84g/302 yards MC, and 6g/24 yards of each CC
Tester 2: Gauge on US4 was 24 stitches and 32 rows in 4”. Width 7.5”.
