Construction notes: The Temple Mittens are worked seamlessly from the bottom up. The ribbed cuff is picked up and knit after the mitten body, creating a neat contrast finish. The mitten begins with an elastic cast-on and is worked in the round in a textured bouclé yarn for a soft and fluffy fabric. Thumb stitches are set aside while the hand is shaped with thumb gusset increases, then the palm is knit straight to length before decreasing for the rounded tip. The thumb is picked up and worked separately, finishing with a simple decrease crown. Finally, the cuff is picked up along the cast-on edge and knit in a folded ribbing, worked in a contrasting smooth yarn for a snug fit and a playful two-texture detail.
Inspiration: The Temple Mittens are inspired by Temple Grandin — a scientist, animal behaviorist, and powerful advocate for neurodiversity. Her groundbreaking work transformed the way animals are treated, especially livestock like sheep, by bringing empathy and thoughtful design into environments where softness and structure were both needed. These mittens echo that balance: soft, fleece-like bouclé evokes warmth and protection, while the firm red cuff provides grounding and gentle structure. Designed to be sensory-friendly, practical, and expressive, they are a small tribute to the idea that softness can be strong — and that different ways of thinking create better ways of caring “I am different, not less.” — Temple Grandin
