This project is a good introduction to “knitted lace”—eyelets worked every row—because the cowl is worked in the round. I hesitate to say
there is a right or wrong side to this piece because I love the way this stitch pattern looks on the purled side just as much as the knit side. The glowing ochre silk-blend yarn was chosen to give a Moroccan flavor to this cowl; the lace motif was likewise Moroccan-inspired by Henry Ossawa Tanner’s painting Gateway Tangier. Tanner was an American artist who spent most of his career in the late nineteenth
century working in Paris.
