When I first began to knit, I fell in love with the way the increases and decreases in the feather-and-fan pattern—one of the oldest lace pat-terns—create the look of rippling waves. For this shawl, I modified the traditional pattern to create vertical panels of waves that are separated by narrow garter-stitch panels. Each wave panel increases from a few stitches at the neck to a full cresting wave at the hem. For a bit of shimmer, I added five beads evenly spaced along the lower edge of each wave and a crochet-inspired “chain 7” at the lower edge of each garter-stitch panel.
