………..

A simple beanie at first glance, the Tailor’s Rib is full of surprises that make it a pleasure to knit and a pleasure to wear. For behind its basic aesthetic lurk some exciting techniques. The elegant top-down construction sculpts a well-rounded crown. But the real interest is in the hidden ‘tailoring’, which creates pleasing proportions and prevents the brim from splaying out after longer wear - all without breaking the flow of the ribbing.

The Tailor’s Rib Beanie is unisex. It can be embellished with a pom-pom, or worn beautifully on its own.

NOTES

Yarn Suggestions
This pattern suits rustic as well as superwash yarns.

If you are interested in the yarn used for the sample: Woolly Mammoth Fibre Co. is a lovely natural yarn dyer in Northern Ireland.

A few inexpensive yarn options (in Europe) which I think work well include:
. Studio Donegal Aran (or Soft Donegal)
. West Yorkshire Spinners BFL (or Jacobs) Aran
. Drops Big Merino

Colourways
This pattern suits solid as well as variegated colourways. Stripes and various colourblock effects will also work quite well.

Yarn Quantities
Note that with some yarns (notably, Studio Donegal), it may be possible to knit the Adult size hat (the non-pom-pom version) with 1 skein only. However, with most Aran weight yarns I have tried, the Adult version eats up approximately 120-150g.
Note also that two skeins are enough for multiple hats, as follows:
2 skeins = 3 Minis
2 skeins = 2 Juniors
2 skeins = 1 Adult + 1 Mini
2 skeins = 1 Mini + 1 Junior
(with some yarns, possibly 2 skeins = 1 Adult + 1 Junior)
