Sweetheart Cloche
Gauge: Openwork Section 4 dc=2” and 5 rows =3”, Band 6 dc=2” and 3 rows = 2”
Yarn Substitution Notes:
This pattern uses a double strand of Caron Simply Soft throughout. I don’t recommend substituting because Simply Soft, while rated a worsted weight (4), is definitely on the light side. If substituting yarn, I highly recommend a light worsted weight yarn (3). Heavier worsted yarns such as Red Heart Super Saver or Vanna’s Choice will produce a larger hat if doubled as the pattern calls for. Another alternative, if substitution is required is to use one strand of a good thick chunky (5) - but not a super chunky. If you are outside the US, I recommend a heavy DK weight yarn (if doubled) and a chunky (if single strand).
Following the pattern as it is written will produce a hat length sufficent for a medium adult head, perhaps a little on the long side, as it was designed to go over the ears for extra warmth in those cold winter months. To shorten, simply reduce the number of stitches before the band.
Using only one strand of a heavier worsted weight (4) such as Vanna’s Choice seems to produce a roughly 20-22” (child - teen - small adult size) hat. But for children, as their heads are not as long, rows may need to be subtracted. I am currently working on the exact pattern changes to adapt for child and baby sizes.
Ann Parri is a new designer, excited to be creating patterns for her fellow crocheters. Lord willing, this is to be the first of many patterns she creates.
