Sweet Honesty Shawl
How about a shawl you can knit up in whatever yarn you have handy? That is, knit it up on fingering yarn and small needles for a delicate effect or on large needles for a different, more open effect. Use heavier yarn and make a thick and cushy wrap that features an interesting more textural surface. You choose!
That’s not the only thing this shawl has going for it. The stitch pattern is easier than it looks and is quickly learned, making this shawl great for Netflix binging, and car or other travel knitting project. Make it as big or small as you like—since it is worked from the bottom point upwards, you only have to keep track a bit so that you have enough yarn to complete a motif and work a narrow garter border—otherwise, stop knitting wherever you like.
I’ve named this knit my Sweet Honesty Shawl as the motifs look very like the flat circular fruits found on the Sweet Honesty plant, a.k.a. Lunaria annua. Another name for this pretty thing is Money plant, as as the flat roundish fruits look like coins.
Yarn suggestions: any solid or lightly heathered yarns will work. For fingering weight yarn you will need about 1.5 100 g. skeins for a decently sized shawl. For DK weight yarn, 4 skeins should suffice. Both shawls shown measure 64” wide and about 30” long. Lighter colors will show the pattern better. Heavily variegated yarns are strongly discouraged—the pattern will get quite lost.
Whatever weight you choose, please plan on spending a bit of time swatching by casting on 24 or 32 ST and knitting a couple of repeats of the stitch pattern on a potential needle size. Stretch it out with your fingers to simulate blocking. Like it? Great—cast on for the actual shawl! Don’t like it? Try a larger needle size for a more open appearance and flexible drape. Or try a smaller needle size to snug up the stitches to each other and make a denser fabric. Blocking will be necessary either way in order to open up the motifs and encourage the background ribbing to get curvy.
