With a lovely edge that looks like swags of fabric, you’ll be sure to swagger each time you wear this scarf or shawl!

Designed with that prized skein of handspun or souvenir yarn in mind, Swagger can be knit in a variety of yarn weights and quantities. The pattern has you weigh your yarn to allow you to use every bit of that special yarn and is suitable for knitters of all skill levels. Two examples are shown in accompanying photos -- a scarf version knit from 298 yards of DK weight handspun and a shawl version knit from a skein of Wollmeise Lace Garn (held double yielding 870 yards). Each had less than 1 gram of yarn left when finished.

The scarf has a narrow 4 stitch cast on that increases in width over 15 rows of garter stitch (slipping 1st stitch at the beginning of every row for tidiness). At this point the stockinette body begins to grow and the swagger pattern at the lower edge of the scarf/shawl begins. The top edge maintains a 4 stitch garter edge. The scarf increases in width by one stitch each right side row until it is your desired width and then it is knit even until time to decrease at the other end. The swagger stops when the scarf is decreased back to width of the tip end and the tip is then decreased down to 4 stitches. The shawl is similar, with increases to the halfway point and decreases beginning immediately thereafter. Only 4 stitches to cast on and only 4 stitches to bind off…how great is that?!!
