Svinafellsjokull
ERRATA: In row one of the main body, all increases should be YO’s, replace m1r and m1L with yo. Row 2 is correct.
Svínafellsjökull (SFEE-nuh-fetls-YUR-kootl, roughly. It is hard to write Icelandic phonetically.) is one of the many glacier tongues that stem from Iceland’s (and Europe’s) largest glacial ice cap, Vatnajökull. Although they are too slow for us to perceive, glaciers are always moving and changing. As this glacier flows, it picks up volcanic ash, silt, and other bits, giving the ice stripes of black and gray among the crystalline whites and blues. Svínafellsjökull is a spur glacier, which means the ice forms jutting, triangular chunks as it gets more space and breaks apart. I designed the main body of this shawl in striped garter stitch to portray the stripes of ash and sand and used the border in this shawl to mimic the jagged points in the glacier.
The shawl also uses a handy new technique designed by Andree Beddoe to improve the look of the garter tab, and it’s even easier!
