Hi Folks!

Thanks for checking out the Surge Cowl! This adjustable cowl is a relaxing knit composed of garter, slipped, and crossed stitches to create playful textured lines, and it is a great opportunity to show off that gradient skein you’ve probably been saving for something special. As you knit, the textured lines will wind back and forth, creating a series of waves running the length of the cowl. Knit in the round, this cowl knits up fast and is a perfect project to work on while multi-tasking.

Like this pattern? Feel free to check out it’s sibling, the Surge Shawl! If you buy both, you’ll automatically get $2 off at checkout. No discount code needed.

Note: This is a highly adjustable pattern with no strict yardage requirements. Feel free to use more or less yarn and bind off whenever you are satisfied with the length of your cowl! Similarly, feel free to add or remove stitches (in increments of 7) when casting on to increase or decrease the circumference, respectively.

Here’s a quick summary of the pattern based on the original sample:
Dimensions:
--10 in (26 cm) in height
--30 in (76 cm) in circumference
Yarn Requirements:
--Around 350 yards of DK/sport weight yarn used in the sample shown
--Designed for 1 color (gradient, solid, tonal, variegated, you pick!)
--Fingering weight also works!
Needles:
--3.25 mm (US 3) circular needles
--For the sample shown a relatively small needle size was used to create a denser knit
Gauge:
--24 sts by 48 rows = 4 in by 4 in (10 cm by 10 cm) in garter stitch after blocking lightly
Other Materials:
--stitch marker
--tapestry needle to weave in ends

Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Reach out! I’ll do my best to respond back as quickly as I can. If I don’t get back to you right away, please forgive me! I probably have my nose buried in a book for grad school.

Special shout out to Surge’s test knitter, Megan! Thank you so much for taking the time to knit this cowl (and it’s equivalent shawl)! Take a look at her interpretation of the Surge Cowl on her project page
