The Sunport Hat is a design collaboration with Breaking Yarn. Look for the full display in March 2025 at the Sunport International Airport in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Sunport Hat is a one-skein project and fun to make. Breaking Delphinium is a two-color yarn. The dark blue is a tonal main color with a bright pop of contrasting turquoise. For the body of the hat, knit the main color and then at the turquoise color make the contrast stitch. It’s called Assigned Pooling when the color of the yarn tells you what stitch to knit.

The folded brim is easy to knit-it’s stockinette in the round! and comfortable to wear. The crown decreasing makes a slouchy shape. The pattern is written for three sizes, but it’s very easy to customize the number of stitches to make the size hat you want.

Gauge is not critical for this project. A smaller needle will give the brim elasticity. Add drape to the body of the hat with a larger needle.

A provisional cast-on is ideal for the folded brim. Churchmouse Yarns and Tea says, “A provisional cast-on is a temporary cast-on method that holds live stitches to be knit into later” (2/16/19).

My favorite provisional method uses a crochet hook and waste yarn. The first step is to make a crochet chain around your needle with waste yarn. Then knit off the waste yarn with your project yarn. When it’s time to pick up the live stitches, the crochet chain unzips easily onto an extra needle. Then knit the brim edges together. The brim is the hardest part of the hat, once that’s done its vacation knitting!

The hat is knit in-the-round. I used two different sizes and different length needles – because those were the needles I grabbed. I Magic Looped the brim and used a shorter 16-inch needle for the main body and crown decreasing. Toward the end, it would have been easier to switch to double points. You can use any in-the-round method that you prefer or have the needles for! Knitter’s choice.
