This shawl design was inspired by my Sister in Law who had asked me to knit her a simple yet elegant shawl for her to wear on her wedding day. I was delighted to do so and after we discussed a few ideas together, I settled on a simple garter based shawl with some eyelet and drop stitch detailing. I didn’t want her to have to worry on the day whether she was wearing the shawl correctly, and the garter stitch base makes this shawl reversible. Further I didn’t want any intricate lace details to detract from her dress and so a simple arrangement of eyelets and drop stitches give this shawl an elegant feminine touch. Finally the name is inspired by my Sister In Law herself who is often called by the nickname Plum by the rest of her family.

What you will need:

• Yarn: 100g – 200g (400m/437yrds-800m/875yrds) of Fingering weight yarn depending on which size you want to make. The smallest size can be made from one 400m/100g skein of yarn. The yarn used for the sample is The Wool Barn in the Silky Singles base – Pink Pearl Colourway (100g/400m) – a total of 130g (520m/570yrds) was used to make this medium size of the shawl.

• Needles – 3.75mm (US 5) on Long Cable to accommodate all the stitches at the end. If you know you have a loose gauge when knitting in Garter Stitch then please size down your needles (this is more important if you are planning to knit the single skein option as otherwise you may run out of yarn).

• Notions – Stitch Markers to mark the increases and I suggest a removable stitch marker to mark the right side of your work.

• Gauge – Gauge is really not too important with this shawl as long as you like the fabric you are getting. But as a reference the gauge I got on the sample shawl was approx. 19sts/ 4inches after blocking.

Finished Size of Shawl:

  • Small - Approx. 160cm (63 inches) on the longest edge & 30cm (12 inches) deep.

  • Medium - Approx. 200cm (79 inches) on the longest edge & 48cm (20 inches) deep.

  • Large - Approx. 220cm (87 inches) on the longest edge & 60cm (24 inches) deep.

Please note finished size will vary greatly depending on gauge, how many pattern repeats you knit of each section, and how extensively the shawl is blocked.
