The Sugar Plum Polo is a 70s inspired pattern. A time in which the use of jeans was democratised and women dared to wear men’s clothing. The pattern’s name comes from an androgynous character from Lou Reed’s song Walk on The Wild Side. In this pattern, you will learn to build a top-down sleeve with the German short rows technique.

Notes On Construction

The Sugar Plum Polo is knitted top-down, with a set-in sleeve. First, the front and back yokes are worked flat and separately. The sleeve cups are then shaped with German short rows and left on hold to work the body. The front is knitted in a fancy broken ribbing stitch, and the back and sleeves are worked in stockinette stitch. Sleeves are worked in the round until you reach the desired length. Finally, you will work and sew the neckline to the neckline box.

For this garment, I wanted to use a rustic but beautiful and quality yarn such as Petit Lambswool by Biches et Buches. This yarn has the perfect colours for the vintage look of this garment. It is an enjoyable yarn to knit, and when it blocks, it leaves a beautiful and defined stitch, but at the same time, a very handmade feeling.

El Sugar Plum Polo es un patrón de inspiración setentera. Un momento en el que se democratizó el uso del pantalón vaquero y las prendas comenzaron a ser cada vez más unisex y en el que las mujeres se atrevieron a llevar prendas masculinas. El nombre del patrón viene de un personaje andrógino de la canción Walk on The Wild Side de Lou Reed. Un patrón con el que aprenderás a construir una manga montada top down con la técnica de vueltas cortas alemanas.

Notas acerca de la construcción

El Sugar Plum Polo es una prenda que se trabaja de arriba abajo, con manga embebida. Primero trabajarás en plano la espalda y los frentes para dejar el cuello abierto. Las mangas se separan al terminar de dar forma al escote y se trabajan al final, por separado con 5 agujas o Magic Loop. A partir de aquí, el cuerpo se trabaja en circular con una bonita y sencilla textura y se cierra con un elástico simple de 2x2. Las mangas y la espalda del polo se trabajan en punto jersey y el frente en punto elástico “partido” o broken ribbing para darle un aire mucho más retro a la prenda.

Para esta prenda quise usar un hilo rústico pero bonito y de calidad como es la Petitt Lambswool de Biches et Buches que se presenta en unos colores perfectos para el look vintage de esta prenda. Es una lana muy agradable de tejer y que cuando bloquea deja un punto bonito y definido pero a la vez con un toque muy manual.
