Stripes Galore
Triangular shawls are a staple in the knitting pattern directory. They are beautiful and fun to knit. But I personally find them a little difficult to style. So I played around with the idea of making a classic triangular shawl more wearable.
After a lot of math and swatching, I think I have developed a new construction method for a triangular shawl. Shaped with short rows, the pattern is easy to work and super-adjustable. With the help of a kitchen scale you can adjust the pattern to any yardage.
This pattern works very well with one skein of crazy colour paired with a solid. Play with colour, this pattern is a great blank canvas!
Needle: 3.5mm / US 4 circular needle 100 cm / 40’’ long or longer to accomodate large number of stitches.
Yarn: Two skeins of fingering weight yarn in contrasting colours. I used one semi-solid and one speckled colourway.
Yardage: 360 - 400 m / 400 - 440 yards of each colourway
Gauge: 18 sts / 38 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches square in stockinette and garter stitch stripes after blocking
Gauge isn’t crucial for this project, but will affect final size and yardage.
Other Notions: Four stitch markers, darning needle for weaving in loose ends, pins or wires for blocking.
Techniques: Knit, purl, increase (yo, M1L, M1R), w&t short rows, i-cord bind-off.
Short rows and i-cord bind-off are explained in detail. Test knitters new to these techniques have successfully followed the pattern.
Final measurements: 250 cm (100’’) wingspan / 55 cm (22’’) depth
The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted.
