“Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.”
― Susan B. Anthony

This is a pattern for an historically inspired cycling sweater intended for the experienced knitter. It is worked from the bottom up, in the round and flat with some shaping achieved by using different needle sizes. You may work the pattern as written or make adjustments as needed for a personal fit. There are suggestions in the pattern as to when, where, and how to make adjustments (including short rows).
Using short row shaping will change the stripe sequence; yarn amount should still be sufficient over 1 - 2 in / 2.5 - 5 cm of shaping. Pockets are optional.

Since most of this garment is worked in 1 x 1 ribbing, there is quite a bit of variation of fit. You may wear this 0 - 3 in/ 0 - 8 cm neg ease with or without historical undergarments. The fit is easily adjusted by changing needle sizes or using pattern notes in conjunction with your measurements.
