Stonington Shawl WG15 SO18
Square shawl, based on the Original Shetland Shawl but worked differently. This one begins with 2 stitches and works the center square on the diagonal. Trapezoid edges are still worked one at a time but this pattern picks up and knits the edge, then picks up and knits the next edge. The only joining is on the last diagonal of the first and last edges.
This shawl is the one EZ is wearing on the cover of the Knitter’s 58, Spring 2000 issue commemorating her life.
Originally published 1976 in Wool Gathering #15. Still available as Spun Out #18.
Pattern description from Shawls and Scarves: The Best of Knitter’s Magazine: “This wonderful piece can be made in two weights of wool that results in two different sized shawls. Read Elizabeth’s In the English Tradition to learn about the art of making traditional Shetland shawls and variations a la Zimmerman. The Stonington Shawl pattern is for the ‘blind followers’ who want it all written out for them, as EZ writes.”
This pattern may be found on pages 116-118 of Knitting Workshop.
