This thermal waffle stitch is the real deal It’s as authentic as your grandpa’s winter long johns. In fact, when I couldn’t find anything close in any stitch dictionary, I actually took apart a pair of said long johns, carefully deconstructed the stitch pattern and recreated it for you here. The main stitch pattern is the original, and the border stitch is a narrowed-down version of the same.

Stone Hollow scarf is reversible, worked in a cushy waffle rib (it’s worked brioche-style) and is knit in one piece from end to end.
A provisional cast on (optional, of course) lays the groundwork for a sewn bind off later for an especially nice finish.

Size: Scarf is 12” wide and 72” long.

Yarn: Sunday Knits 5 ply (worsted weight) in Eden (merino), Nirvana (merino cashmere), Angelic (merino angora) or Brigadoon (merino tweed); (each blend has 137 yd /125 m to 1¾ oz / 50 g);
4 skeins. Shown in Eden iris.

Substitute any light worsted weight yarn that typically works up at a gauge of 17-22 sts per 4” using needle sizes 6-8 US / 4.0-5.0 mm.

Needles & notions: Size 8/5.0 mm needles for scarf, 6/4.0 mm for ribbed border; stitch markers, tapestry needle.

Gauge: 18 sts and 36 rows = 4² / 10 cm in waffle rib stitch on larger needles; 22 sts and 30 rows = 4” / 10 cm in Stockinette stitch on smaller needles.

Techniques used: Slip stitch, increases including M1 and lifted increases, provisional cast on and sewn bind off if using Italian bind off to finish.
