This design is the fourth of a series—twelve explorations of different stitch patterns throughout 2026—and the first of three projects focused on slipped stitches. This month, we’re working with mosaic knitting. The designs feature a very simple stitch pattern for a sample square and a couple of motifs to work into coasters. Work five coasters in each design and you can use them for a game of Tic Tac Toe! Although mosaic knitting is usually worked flat, you’ll find instructions in the pattern document for working the “Three and One” stitch pattern in the round. There are different ways of representing mosaic knitting in charts—and I’ve discussed those different chart styles in workshops that you might have attended. For this pattern document, I’ve chosen the chart style that the majority of my workshop attendees have expressed a preference for.

The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:

  • cast on and bind off;
  • knit
  • slipping a stitch, with yarn held to the front and with yarn held to the back of your work;
  • reading a mosaic chart (explained in the instructions).
