This design is the first of a series—twelve explorations of different knit-purl stitch patterns throughout 2025. This month, we’re looking at Farrow Rib, one of my favourite ribbing patterns. It isn’t as elastic as a 1 x 1 rib, but it has more visual interest. Worked over a 3-stitch repeat, it features a column of stockinette stitches, a column of garter stitch, and a column of reverse stockinette stitches. It’s a simple one-row repeat when worked flat, or a two-round repeat when worked in the round. The pattern document includes general instructions for working Farrow Rib in both of these methods, as well as specific instructions for a sample square and a hat. It also includes a few designer ideas to help inspire your own designs featuring Farrow Rib.

The techniques you will need to know, or learn, in order to complete this project are:

  • cast on;
  • knit and purl;
  • ssk decrease.

I will be donating all of the items from this year’s Stitch Play to a local charity, and encourage all participants to consider knitting for charities, whether based in their own hometown or going to people in need anywhere in the world.
