Sterne Slippers
Sterne means “star” in Norwegian. If you have followed my work you know that giving slippers is one of my favorite gifts. I designed these slippers for The Nordic Knitting Primer. It’s a great way to practice purling in colorwork. This pattern has instructions for every adult size. I hope you love making these for everyone you know and love. Stars = light. Light= joy. I hope you love these slippers as much as I do. These slippers are finished with a couple rows of Tvinnarand around the cuff,. There are photo tutorials for purling in colorwork and for working this lovely braid in my book.

NEEDLES: Double-pointed needles (DPNs) or

SUGGESTED NEEDLE SIZE: US 4 (3.5 mm) for
women’s slippers and US 4 (3.5 mm) for men’s
slippers. Needle size will vary widely. Please swatch.
GAUGE AND SWATCH
Swatch in colorwork.
WOMEN’S SLIPPER: 24 stitches and 24 rows = 4
inches (10 cm)
MEN’S SLIPPER: 19 stitches and 19 rows = 4 inches
(10 cm)
If you need a larger size, determine gauge, then
move up a needle size for a roomier slipper. I
use a size US 3 (3.25 mm) for a women’s size
small (to fit US shoe size 5–7 / Euro 36–38) and a
size US 5 (4 mm) for a women’s size large (to fit
US shoe size 8–10 / Euro size 39–41). I use a size 4
(3.5 mm) for a men’s size medium (to fit US shoe
size 8–11 / Euro 43–45). Keep that in mind. If you
need a smaller size, go down a needle size (from
gauge) or shrink them a bit with extra felting in hot
water. Yardage will vary slightly when you alter the
gauge, but there is plenty of yarn in each skein for
all sizes.
