Inspired by the saris from my heritage, Starry Night is a bold, patterned wrap. With a border motif designed based on an interweaving circle pattern and a diamond and chevron body motif, this wrap is styled on the look of formal saris leading to a visually striking piece. Plain stocking stitch sections are relaxing knitting and ensure the wrap is wearable by breaking up the patterning. The colours used for the sample were designed by the dyer (Bleating Art Yarn) to evoke the golden colours in saris for this design. The wrap can be worn to display either one mosaic pattern at the front with the other on the back or both patterns showing on both sides. A rectangular shape with a seed stitch border evokes the woven sensibility of saris and results in a wrap which is easy and versatile to wear. Contrasting colours allow the patterns to shine through, particularly when worn with solid colour outfits. Starry Night uses mosaic knitting, which means that the only skills required to make this project are knitting, purling, slipping and counting – the pattern only uses a single colour at a time, meaning that this is suitable for all knitters including adventurous beginners. Starry Night is a celebration of patterns and culture, embodying the feel of a sari throughout this knit.

First time trying mosaic knitting?
Most of Starry Night’s test knitters had never used this technique before trying this pattern. Starry Night is suitable for adventurous beginners. Gauge and sizing
Gauge is not crucial for this project, though it will change the final dimensions and yarn usage. This pattern is easily adjustable for desired length and contains tips on weighing yarn throughout the pattern to ensure that gauge variations will not interfere with the ability to complete the pattern.
The sample at the pattern gauge produces a wrap that is approximately 17.75 inches/45cm wide and 59 inches/150cm long.
