The Starburst Shawl is a bold, graceful statement piece that I designed when I was scheduled to give a talk and needed to wear something powerful to give me courage.

A profusion of magic lilies inspired the 16 shades of Shetland fingering weight yarn I used—but the pattern would also be stunning in simple indigo blue and white or natural dark sheep’s gray and cream combinations (or, of course, anything you desire!).

The Starburst Shawl is knit in the round from the point, forming a large cone that is then cut open to reveal the triangle shape. The borders, which hide the steek, are then knit onto the shawl.

The very large motif (112 stitches square!) requires some trapping of long floats and is impossible to memorize, but it’s fun to work on a much larger scale without the worry of shaping for a sweater! The shawl has been charted in six pieces to the center; you’ll work the chart backwards for the other half of the shawl.

If you prefer an even larger shawl it would be easy to add another half-repeat to the top.
