I have temporarily reactivated the pattern as of 5/31/2023 due to the number of messages I have received.

This was a pattern I wrote 12+ years ago and made available for free. The pattern has been deactivated as of 2/6/2023 due to the fact I still get contacted about it by people who have questions and what I consider to be overall generally poor reviews (sitting at about 4 stars right now on a site where people typically give more generous reviews). It was a pattern that was supposed to bring both myself and the people I shared it with joy. If someone wants to volunteer to do a thorough tech edit, I would be happy to consider making this pattern available again.

Important Pattern Information:

  1. If you have not done stranded knitting before, this may not be the pattern for you. It is not a beginner’s project. Stranded knitting on a sock is much less forgiving than, say, on a hat.

  2. Knit LOOSELY, especially if you have not done stranded knitting before. There is a definite tendency for people to knit too tightly, which means the sock will not have any stretch. You can test this by knitting a couple of inches of pattern and then seeing if the sock stretches. Compare to the stretch of another hand knit sock to see if it’s comparable.

  3. Did I mention stretch? It is very important. These socks are designed to use stretch to fit well. They should fit your ankles, but stretch to accommodate your calf. Without a good amount of natural stretch from the knitting, this will not happen.

  4. When you are done, please do block your socks. This evens things out and relaxes the yarn a bit. They will look a lot better. If you don’t have a sock form, you can just block them flat.

  5. For an easier sock, just knit the Star Trek pattern on the cuff. When you reach the heel, discontinue the pattern and just knit in black. It will go a LOT faster, and people will mainly just see the cuff…

About the pattern:

I grew up watching Star Trek and I’ve spent a good portion of my life going to sci-fi/fantasy conventions. Last year a friend and I taught a geek knitting workshop at one, after which I was inspired to work up a pattern for Star Trek socks. Here’s what I came up with. Enjoy!
